Development Chemist (KTP Associate)

Abertay University are seeking a highly motivated graduate to take a leading role in a 24-month project in partnership with W & J Knox Ltd aimed to develop processes to extract high value commercial products from the aquatic waste materials which are retrieved during fish net servicing. The Development Chemist (KTP Associate) will be employed by Abertay University but is expected to work from the W & J Knox fish net servicing site at Kilbirnie, KA25 7DZ. The employment will be subjected to the terms and conditions of the company (hours of work, holiday entitlement, etc). W & J Knox are a leading supplier of nets and provide a range of net services to the fishing and aqua culture industries. Their net servicing is a highly engineered process designed to maximise net life.

This 24-month fixed term post is funded through Knowledge Transfer Partnerships and funded by Innovate UK and the Scottish Funding Council. The KTP Associate will benefit from a tax-free personal development of £4,000.

The successful candidate should have a 2.1 Bachelor (Hons) degree or above in chemical engineering, applied chemistry, chemistry, food processing or a closely related area. Industrial or postgraduate research experience in the areas of chemical engineering, applied chemistry, chemistry, food processing or a related area is desirable. Substantial experience with analytical and chemical techniques and excellent practical laboratory skills are required. Experience of industry R&D along with commercial insight or experience of by-product recovery process would be an advantage. In addition to having the appropriate background, the successful applicant will be an ambitious, enthusiastic person, with good interpersonal and communication skills, able to work independently and as part of a team, using initiative and logical thinking. Strong organisational and time management skills are essential. If appropriate, the post holder will be encouraged to register for a higher degree at Abertay University.
