Job description

We are seeking a highly motivated chemical engineering graduate to take a leading role in a 24-month project in partnership with W & J Knox Ltd aimed to develop processes to extract high value commercial products from the aquatic waste materials which are retrieved during fish net servicing. The Chemical Engineer (KTP Associate) will be employed by Abertay University but is expected to work from the W & J Knox fish net servicing site at Kilbirnie, KA25 7DZ. The employment will be subjected to the terms and conditions of the company (regarding hours of work, holiday entitlement, etc.). W & J Knox Ltd are both a leading supplier of nets and a provider of a range of net services to the fishing and aqua culture industries. Their net servicing is a highly engineered process designed to maximise net life.

This 24-month fixed term post is funded through the government sponsored Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP). KTP supports partnerships between business and universities or research organisations, placing graduates to work on innovative high profile projects. The Chemical Engineer (KTP Associate) benefits from a tax-free personal development budget (allowing them to participate in courses / professional qualifications) of GBP 4,000 and will be responsible for other budgets including travel and consumables.

The successful candidate will have a 2.1 Bachelor (Hons.) degree or above in chemical engineering, applied chemistry, chemistry or a closely related area. Industrial or postgraduate research experience in the areas of chemical engineering, applied chemistry, chemistry, food processing or a related area is desirable. Substantial experience with analytical and chemical techniques and excellent practical laboratory skills are required. Experience of industry R&D along with commercial insight orexperience of by-product recovery process would be an advantage. In addition to having the appropriate background, the successful applicant will be an ambitious, enthusiastic person, with good interpersonal and communication skills who can work either independently or as part of a team, using initiative and logical thinking. Strong organisational and time management skills are essential.  If appropriate, the post holder will be encouraged to register for a higher degree at Abertay University.
