Business Development Officer

The West of Scotland KTP Centre is hosted by the University of Strathclyde and represents nine partner institutions. The Centre has been developing successful Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTP) for over twenty years and has a portfolio of around 50 projects ( KTP projects help business to improve their competitiveness and productivity through the better use of knowledge, technology and skills that reside within the UK knowledge base. KTP is funded by Innovate UK with 12 other funding organisations.

The Business Development Officer will work as part of a small team in a quiet but extremely busy office. Applications are invited from graduates with a degree (ideally science or engineering discipline) and relevant work experience in a business environment or knowledge exchange activity in higher education.

You will use your networking skills to identify potential KTP partners and be capable of matching academic expertise with opportunities to work with business. You will support academic and business clients through the grant application process and be responsible for ensuring high quality proposals are developed by agreed deadlines.

This position will require you to have excellent writing skills with the ability to present technical information in an easy to read format. You will have a high degree of numeracy and financial literacy along with excellent IT skills and a natural aptitude for learning unfamiliar software packages. You will demonstrate innovative approaches in previous roles and be proactive, target driven and have a dynamic approach. The post requires you to have a driving licence and the use of a car.

Whilst not essential for the role, candidates with experience writing KTP/knowledge exchange grant funding applications are highly desirable.

Brief Outline of Job:

To seek out identify suitable KTP partners and write grant application and proposal forms. To support academic and business clients through the entire KTP grant submission process.

Main Activities/Responsibilities:

Develop a network of contacts in the business and Higher Education communities. Develop a broad knowledge of the expertise available in partner institutions and match academic capabilities with opportunities to collaborate with businesses. Promote the scheme to potential businesses and academic groups across all partner institutions.

2. Build and maintain up-to-date knowledge of KTP and related schemes the place of useful learning

3. Develop and facilitate KTP funding applications by supporting academic and business clients through the entire submission process to grant award. Contribute to the technical content of the application form to produce a high quality proposal by the agreed deadline.

4. Provide post-grant assistance to KTP partners by representing the KTP Centre at project launch meetings and participating in Associate inductions.

5. Provide input to the KTP Centre's business development strategy and work towards delivering the implementation and marketing plan

6. Promote KTP to companies, academics (and departments), business support agencies and other organisations to generate new leads

7.Responsible for the account management process utilising the Centre's CRM system (Swiftpage ACT!). Analyse complex data and provide relevant information and detailed reports to university partners

8. Contribute to portfolio management meetings with university partners to share information and discuss promotion of KTP and portfolio targets.

9. Input as a team member into departmental administrative activities

Person Specification

Educational and/or Professional Qualifications

(E=Essential, i.e. a candidate must meet all essential criteria to be considered for selection, D=Desirable)

E1 Degree qualified (preferably in a science/engineering discipline) or with substantial relevant experience

D1 Postgraduate qualification


E2 Experience working in a business environment or knowledge exchange activity in Higher Education

D2 Experience writing KE funding applications preferably for KTP

D3 Experience working in different areas of industry and of innovation used within a business setting

D4 Experience of managing projects in a business and/or academic setting

D5 Understanding of Scottish Government, Scottish Enterprise and business support agencies
