Data Scientist (KTP Associate)

We seek to appoint an ambitious and creative Data Scientist to undertake an exciting and challenging Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) project in collaboration with Syngro Ltd (

Syngro (Maru/Syngro) is part of the Maru Group of market research companies, and is a leading Customer Experience technology company. They provide next generation Customer Experience reporting, data analytics, and performance management software to empower enterprises with the customer insight they need to drive profitable action, delivered through their Syngro “Eye” technology. Syngro provides data analysis and visualisation solutions that focus on customer insight and market research. As part of its ongoing development, it would like to increase its capability in the area of data science.

The successful candidate will lead an ambitious project to deliver a step-change in the market research industry. They will develop forecast models to predict the future shopping behaviour of customers, so that customer satisfaction and retention can be improved. This new capability will ultimately be used to support client decision-making on customer management strategies, so that dissatisfied customers can be identified and proactively managed to retain their loyalty.

Applicants should have strong modelling skills and preferably an MSc in Operational Research, Management Science, Industrial Engineering, Statistics, Computer Science or related discipline. Applicants should be interested in problem-solving and enjoy making sense of complex data. The successful candidate will work closely with the support and guidance of a team of developers based within Syngro, as well as with the academic supervisors, Dr Euan Barlow and Dr Matthew Revie (both in the Department of Management Science), and Dr Marc Roper (Department of Computer & Information Sciences). The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to work towards management qualifications through the KTP programme as well as to register for a higher degree through the Department of Management Science within Strathclyde Business School. Main Activities/Responsibilities

1. Engaging with key stakeholders to understand problem complexities, the sources of data available and the composition of these.

2. Developing and analysing multi-variate prediction models to forecast customer shopping behaviour, which incorporate dependence on previous trends as well as responses to customer satisfaction surveys

3. Further developing and analysing the prediction models, when customer segmentation analysis is also incorporated.

4. Developing and validating prototype analytical tools which industrialise the prediction models, and integrating these with existing software.

5. Embedding new knowledge and analytical tools into Syngro by providing training and support.

6. Reporting to and engaging with senior management within Syngro Ltd. and the Maru Group parent company to inform strategic decision making.

7. Project management and resourcing, ensuring that the project is organised, planned and time is used efficiently.

Education and/or Professional Qualifications

E1 A minimum of 2.1 Honours Degree in Operational Research, Management Science, Computing Science, Statistics or related relevant discipline.

D1 Masters Degree in appropriate discipline (or close to completion)

D2 PhD in appropriate discipline (or close to completion)


E2 Previous experience in developing and implementing statistical/data analytics/machine learning models to business and industry problems, and working with real and complex data-sets.

D3 Previous industrial experience.

E3 Experience of engaging with stakeholders to structure and develop conceptual models of complex problems.

E4 Ability to demonstrate practical experience of using the R programming language, although advanced experience with other software packages including SAS, Matlab, C or Python will be considered.

E5 Experience of writing reports for technical and non-technical audience.
