The Innovative Construction Technologies & Building Information Management Research Cluster, Department of Architecture, in partnership with Norscot Joinery Ltd (www.norscot.co.uk) seek to recruit a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) Associate in the area of integration of advanced virtual reality visualisation and building information modelling. The KTP is a trilateral collaborative project between the Associate, the University and a company partner (see www.ktpws.org.uk). 

Norscot is manufacturer of energy efficient timber frame kit homes, windows and doors, selling to both private clients, homebuilders and architects. Norscot have a high profile in Scotland and excellent online presence as well as search engine ranking under ‘timber frame kit homes’. Norscot aim to become the leading provider of timber framed kit buildings to self-builders in the UK. In accordance to this strategic goal, the company is aiming to leverage its market presence from existing reliance on word of mouth, printed and online media to the use of a robust VR based BIM enabled showroom application that can enable clients see, interact, and evaluate their houses before they are built.

As a KTP Associate you will be principally based at Norscot’s Bower Workshops in Wick, Caithness, but you will spend periods of time at the University of Strathclyde as required. You will work jointly with Strathclyde and Norscot to carry research and development activities related to the prospective Norscot BIM-VR application. You will also be required to disseminate high-quality research output through the appropriate reporting conduits, e.g. high-impact journals and conferences.

In addition to the KTP core development training, you will have a dedicated budget of £5,000 for further training and career development as well as opportunity to enrol for a part time MPhil/PhD with the Department of Architecture at Strathclyde University, and the University will waive the tuitions fees.

To be considered for the role you will be educated to an MSc or First Class MEng Degree in a relevant discipline (e.g. Architecture, Digital Media, or related disciplines). You will have a strong programming and software development background with experience in developing Real-time Visualisation and user interface design in Virtual Reality Environment (VRE). You will have strong knowledge or will be keen to learn about building information modelling concepts and technologies. You also will be capable of high-level problem solving and be capable of working effectively as part of a team and on your own initiative.
