Applied Chemist/Polymer Chemist - KTP Associate

As part of a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) with Sureclean, we are seeking a Knowledge Transfer Associate. The Associate will take a leading role in the development of a polymer electrode based electrolytic system for the treatment of highly chloride oily waste water streams. The Associate will also develop a photocatalytic treatment system for the reduction of low level dissolved organic/hydrocarbon content from the waste stream. The Associate will also have the opportunity to register for a research degree based on the work carried out on the project.

The post holder will be employed by the School of Engineering of Robert Gordon University and will be based predominantly at the premises of Sureclean in Alness, Ross-shire and supported and supervised by staff from both the company and the University.

Sureclean is one of Scotland’s leading treatment solutions providers, onshore, offshore, in the UK and overseas. The Center for Research in Energy and the Environment (CRE+E) in the School of Engineering, which the post-holder will join, is a multidisciplinary group with applied research expertise.

Project key objectives:

Develop conducting polymer electrodes for a small scale unit reducing salt content of the waste streams by electrochemical means

Development of an immobilised photocatalyst polishing system to further reduce hydrocarbon content

Transfer knowledge of electrochemical electrode and photocatalytic technology Sureclean

Develop personal skills (verbal and written) to meet the requirements of an increasing responsibility and experience level.

A KTP is a three-way project between an associate, a business and a university (see www.ktponline.org.uk). The associates are recruited to manage strategic projects within the company, whist being supported by a dedicated academic supervisor. Founded in 1975, KTP is one of Europe’s largest recruitment programmes. This position is funded for a period of 24 months by the KTP Programme. This is an opportunity to join a project which will offer challenging business analysis and process improvement work within a supportive, well managed and motivated team environment. In addition to this there is a dedicated tax-free personal development budget of £4,000 for the KTP Associate.

You will drive the development of a polymer electrode based electrolytic system for the removal of salt from high chloride content oily waste water streams. Your responsibilities will also include developing a photocatalytic treatment system for the reduction of low level dissolved organic/hydrocarbon content from the waste stream, based on research within CRE+E and the previous experience of Sureclean. It is expected that the post holder will have the skill to produce design and fabrication of a composite water treatment system.

Educated to degree level with extensive knowledge of polymer chemistry or electrochemistry, you will need a 2.1 Honours degree in Applied Chemistry or Polymer Chemistry or a strongly related discipline. Strong interpersonal skills, the ability to self-direct, strong problem solving and analytical skills are essential. In addition to this, you will have excellent report writing and presentation skills, as well as being self-driven but comfortable working in an interdisciplinary team.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES:

Review of current processes & existing methodologies/technologies: Literature view, reports, process map, presentation

Develop Strategic Plan & Data Management Plan: Plan, data storage system

Develop conducting polymer electrodes for salt reduction: reports, protocols/SOPs

Develop immobilised photoreactor system for hydrocarbon reduction: reports, protocols, SOPs

Develop Test Method for Conducting Electrode System: Protocols/SOPs

Develop Test Method for Photocatalytic Reactor: Protocols/SOPs

Develop Small scale HCS System: Small scale unit, reports, data

Larger scale system design & implementation plan: Designs, reports/protocols/SOPs, manual

Maintain an up-to-date project plan and provide a progress report to presentation at regular Local Management Committee (LMC) meetings.

Deliver presentations to immediate project team members, technical experts and peers

Attend KTP personal development training modules

Assist in maintaining compliance in all Sureclean Waste Transfer Operations

Simple onsite sampling and analysis of received wastes and for compliance of our trade effluent discharge consent

Proactive involvement initially, leading to Ownership of the planning, pricing and delivery of waste treatment solutions for Sureclean clients

Qualifications and Professional Memberships

BSc (Hons) in Applied Chemistry or Polymer Chemistry, 2.1 or above

Willingness to actively engage with professional bodies and agencies

Knowledge and Experience

Knowledge of polymer chemistry, electrochemistry

Graduate level experience

Strong interpersonal skills

Ability to self-direct

Strong problem solving and analytical skill

Good report writing and presentation/communication skills

Able to work within interdisciplinary teams and alone

Excellent prioritisation and management skills

Awareness of commercial drivers
